Ravichandran Ashwin said that India believed in its defence, despite Bangladesh placing Bangladesh under stress in the second Test at Mirpur.
Ashwin And Shreyas Iyer forged a strong unbeaten 71-run partnership to aid India defeat Bangladesh 3 wickets to 1 to complete the clean sweep of the Test series on Christmas.
“Game was on the line. I thought Bangladesh played really well. The game had to be won the hard way. In these situations, sometimes you feel you need to hit your way. They bowled well,” Ashwin declared at the press conference following the match.
Ashwin also said that the ball had made an impact in the match in which he was playing for the second time. As Ashwin came in with Shreyas Iyer at the middle position, India were seven down when Mehidy Hasan Miraz rattled India’s top order to finish his five wicket haul.
“But we needed to trust our defence. I wanted to get in and support Shreyas. Pitches were good, they were a touch slow. But the ball made a difference. The hosts put us under a lot of pressure. Good performances as well,” Ashwin stated.
India was stricken by a quick collapse as they chased 140 runs. Mehidy hit three times to ensure Bangladesh’s hopes remain alive of winning the two-test series. India recorded 45/4 at stumps on the third and final day.
On Day 4 India was sacked of night watchman Jaydev Udkat in the early hours. The loss resulted in a rush of wickets, as Axar Patel as well as Rishabh Pant left in quick succession.
